For an extra $5 a month, you can pay for an “ad-free” version of CBS All Access that will still have ads. Variety reports that although the network is promoting its upgraded subscription will be “free of ads,” you’ll still most certainly see them on the service. While you’ll be able to watch your on-demand shows without advertisements (minus promotional cut-ins…which many would consider ads), the live TV service will still feature the commercials you see on television.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t expect CBS to change the way they do their broadcast television, but it sounds like this “upgrade” just means “a few less ads than you had before.”
I hate to beat a drum like I’m bashing it, but I still think it’s bull s*** this new Star Trek series is exclusive to their streaming platform! Especially when I get the news that the series will be heading to Netflix in other countries! I’m hoping with their continuing issues that CBS just throws their hands up and gives people what they want…but that’s not likely.
Stranger Things has dominated this summer in a huge way, and though there was a period of time when I thought maybe the entire internet (GeekTyrant included) was going a little overboard with all of the coverage, this morning’s announcement about a confirmed second season and learning more details about it has made me come all the way back around to being super excited about the show again.
So Stranger Things mania continues in full force, and I want to share this video with you from the comedy group Superfruit (via LS), who, with what appears to be a budget of approximately $30, have recreated the entire first season of the show in three humorous minutes. Enjoy. (Warning: major spoilers ahead.)
Netflix and Bill Nye The Science Guy are teaming up for a “talk show.” Bill Nye Saves The World will tackle science and its impact on politics, culture, and society in general. Variety reports the show is slated to begin in Spring of 2017. Nye issued the following statement:
“Since the start of the ‘Science Guy’ show, I’ve been on a mission to change the world by getting people everywhere excited about the fundamental ideas in science. Today, I’m excited to be working with Netflix on a new show, where we’ll discuss the complex scientific issues facing us today, with episodes on vaccinations, genetically modified foods and climate change. With the right science and good writing, we’ll do our best to enlighten and entertain our audience. And, perhaps we’ll change the world a little.”
I’m sure if nothing else, Nye will definitely make waves when his show premieres! Whether that’s a good or bad thing, we will find out. Sounds like Netflix is trying to make their own Last Week Tonight and I don’t know if Nye has the comedic chops of John Oliver!
Well, there goes any notion I had that Room star Jacob Tremblay is cute. Naomi Watts and Charlie Heaton are also in tow for Shut In, a story about a desperate mother and an evil child. When her son is put into a vegetative state after a car accident that also kills her husband, a child psychologist adopts a foster child who is presumably evil.
Really we can’t be sure of anything watching the trailer as it seems there’s more going on here than meets the eye in this supernatural thriller! I will say this movie really set itself up for success with its casting line-up. To get America’s cutest child actor to play something scary and the perturbed teen from Stranger Things in the same movie?! Plus Naomi Watts, but you know…she’s always a big deal.
I’m cautiously optimistic about this one. Provided they don’t go the way with the plot that I think they could go, I believe this one will be a big box office seller. Watch the trailer (via USA TODAY) and watch out for it in theaters November 11th.
We know that there’s a chance season 4 of the amazing BBC series Sherlock could be its last, but if that does end up being the case, at least it appears to be going out with a bang. (For the record, I’m guessing it’ll stick around for at least one more season after that.)
In any event, stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are lookin’ slick in this brand new promo photo for the upcoming fourth season. Is it just me, or is Watson’s hair more gray than it has been in the past? Maybe Sherlock has been stressing him out more than usual lately — or maybe it’s caused by added stress due to the fact that he and Mary are having a child this season?
Promising laughter, tears, shocks, surprises and extraordinary cases…series four will begin with the nation’s favourite detective, the mercurial Sherlock Holmes, back once more on British soil as Doctor Watson and his wife, Mary, prepare for their biggest ever challenge – becoming parents for the first time.
Season 4 is set to debut sometime in 2017.
You can expect a lot of hip-hop music to be at the forefront of Marvel and Netflix’s Luke Cage. In addition to the soundtrack, the score will also have a very hip-hop feel as well. With help from guys like Method Man, A Tribe Called Quest, and A$AP Ferg, it sounds like this score will be just as awesome as the tunes we’ve heard so far.
A bulk of it is hip-hop, but it looks like jazz, R&B, and some other genres make their way into the mix as well. Personally, I haven’t been displeased with anything I’ve heard from the videos so far, and this one is no exception! Check it all out in the video below.

It’s no secret that Ash Vs. Evil Dead Season 2 is going to deliver an insane amount of blood and gore, but there’s more to the franchise than that. There’s a great story to tell and that story follows Ash to his hometown of Elk Grove, where he will confront several family and friends from his past including Ash’s dad, Brock (played by Lee Majors), and Ash’s childhood best friend, Chet (played by Ted Raimi).
In a recent interview with Comingsoon, series star Bruce Campbell talked about Ash’s story arc and offered some information on Season 2:
“He goes home and he has to deal with the mess he made three years ago. He has to make good with the town that he basically left in shambles and fight the evil dead… and save the town. That’s a hell of an assignment. He has to deal with his father and his old pal Chet and his ex-girlfriend and sh*t like that, old nemeses, boyhood nemeses, you know, all the sh*t you run into when you go back home, plus deadites.”
So Ash is going to be dealing with a lot of shit this next season. Campbell went on to say that even though the next season will be filled with lots of gore, it will also include more story and character development:
“So it’s cool. I know everybody talks about gore, but for all the talk about the gore, this season actually has a, I would say, substantially more character development. You’re going to spend a lot more time with your pal Ash and find out what makes him tick, and his friends are on a crazy journey this year, too. Kelly’s being schooled by Ruby. It’ll be interesting.”
Ash has always been such a fun, crazy, and fascinating character and it’s awesome that they will be exploring him even more in this upcoming season.

When I sit down to watch any movie, there almost always ends up being at least one aspect of it that strikes me as as “wrong” in some way or another. I don’t actively search for these elements — they just pop up along the way, and I’m sure you notice them too. Sometimes it’s a character making a decision that doesn’t feel justified, or a shot that seems particularly out of place. Sometimes it’s a super cheesy line of dialogue, or an actor edging just a bit too far over the top as to briefly pull me out of the performance. Too many of these moments can ruin a movie, but for the most part, they’re just little blips that I observe and sail right past. For me, The Light Between Oceans is the extraordinarily rare film that does not contain a single false note. I was utterly lost in the film from beginning to end, engulfed in every detail from the stitching on the characters’ clothing to the heartbreaking events that propel its story. Tinged with melancholy and brushed with a light touch of hope, The Light Between Oceans is an unforgettable experience.
The plot is straightforward and relatively simple. It’s about a haunted World War I veteran named Tom (Michael Fassbender) who becomes a lighthouse keeper and learns to experience joy again when he marries a bright young woman named Isabel (Alicia Vikander). After the two endure trouble having children, a boat with a newborn baby in it washes up on shore of their secluded island and they decide to pass the child off as their own. Years later, they meet the child’s real mother (Rachel Weisz) and Tom’s guilt about what they’ve done threatens to rip their family apart.
As always, it comes down to execution, and writer/director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond The Pines) flawlessly commands every facet of what we see on screen. It’s a truly stunning thing to behold: not just actors, a director, and a cinematographer working at the top of their games, but every aspect of production coalescing to form a singular vision and remaining at an incredibly high bar over the film’s two-plus hour duration.
Every performance is pitch perfect, from the towering leads all the way down to the smallest speaking role. Fassbender is tremendous as the stone-faced former soldier who softens up when he meets the love of his life, and whether he’s playing with his little girl or wracked by his decisions, he remains spellbinding to watch. Vikander is an absolute revelation as Isabel, an effervescent soul who wears her love and loss on her sleeve. Her breathless performance made me feel — palpably feel — every emotion she experiences, and this is the kind of transcendent work that would vault her to the top of every casting director’s list if she hadn’t already been there for a year. Because those two are so outstanding, I can imagine a scenario in which Rachel Weisz is overlooked. That would be a crime, because she’s every bit as amazing here, internalizing a myriad of feelings as this story progresses and brimming with so much pain, guilt, and sorrow that you fear she could overflow at any second.
Adam Arkapaw’s cinematography envelops the audience in warmth, with exquisite yellows, greens, and light grays accentuating the awe-inspiring landscape of the island, which feels like the edge of the known world. Even the production design is immaculate, with an ancient, out of tune piano in the couple’s home alternately serving as a charming antique and a harbinger of immeasurable despair. (Alexandre Desplat’s feathery, piano-heavy score is, unsurprisingly, also terrific.) And from what I’ve heard, Cianfrance’s excellent screenplay hews pretty closely to M.L. Stedman’s best-selling novel of the same name, and there’s an earnestness to the storytelling that feels as if it’s from another era. This is the anti-blockbuster in practically every respect.
I’m fully aware of the risk of overhyping this movie, especially considering how drastically different people react to these sorts of narratives. But movies like this either connect with you or they don’t, and this one connected so squarely with me that I felt like a home run ball that Cianfrance launched out of a stadium with the perfect swing. This is the kind of movie that makes me wish I were a better writer, solely so I could more effectively express my love for it. So I’ll keep it simple: not only is The Light Between Oceans one of the best films of 2016, it may be one of the best dramas I’ve ever seen.
